Let me begin by saying that I have read a Dessen book before. I read Dreamland a few months ago. I don’t remember it being amazing or super special, but I don’t remember it being bad either. It was a good book - nice story and characters. I got it from my friend in August, along with three other Dessen books. It was one of them that I am writing this about.
I finished reading Someone Like You today. I am sorry if any of my followers happen to like this book, but it my opinion it was pretty horrible. Once I finished it I realized maybe it wasn’t as bad as I said it was before, but it was pretty terrible. The plot was completely obvious. The writing wasn’t very good. There were also many mistakes, and those I can’t stand. For example there’s a paragraph where the main character sits down and then the next paragraph begins with her sitting down, except she was already sitting so what the hell? Not to mention that most of the characters were impossible to like. Especially the main girl, Halley. She was pretty annoying for a supposedly smart sixteen year old. I just couldn’t get myself to like her. She was mean and stupid and said the wrong thing at the wrong time. I enjoy books much more when the main character is someone I could see myself friends with in real life. The only relativley okay person was Halley’s best friend Scarlett, who seemed like a nice person. The writing was simple, childish for the teenage pregnancy, coming of age, dealing with relationships kind of book. I just really didn’t like this book and that’s a big disappointment considering it was recommended to me by someone I trust and that the previous Dessen book I read was actually quite nice. Also, not that that matters, the cover was ugly.
I don’t really recommend this book. I mean, it was okay, but there are better ones about the exact same thing.
I think this is the first bad review I’ve written on here and I hope to keep it this way.
