For those of you that don’t know what I’m referring to, it’s these two extracts from page 47 of the A Very Potter Senior Year script.
HAGRID: Nope! Oh they wanted me to leave; but I refused to attend graduation! I’m
technically still a student! Plus people leave you alone once you start threatening to hurt
yourself. But when you love something so much and you feel it slippin’ through your
fingers JUST HOLD ON TIGHTER! (Hagrid squeezes Harry)
RON: Thanks Hagrid! This has been fun!
HERMIONE: We better get back to the dorms.
HAGRID: You don’t have to leave yet…
RON: Hahaha! Bye Hagrid!
HAGRID: If you leave I might hurt myself!
HERMIONE: You’re so funny Hagrid! Bye! (The kids exit the hut)
This is not okay.
I am saying this first because there is NOTHING that can excuse that kind of flippant comment towards a very serious issue.
I am beyond amazed that ANYONE in the Team would have even thought this up, so my particular anger is focused on Nick Lang, Matt Lang, and Brian Holden for including it in the script in the first place. I am also surprised at the rest of StarKid (particularly the Glow* girls) for not flagging this up when they were presented with the script. For a group of people who are best known for their compassion and interaction with their fans, this is a horrible message for any young person who is struggling with self-harm and other mental health problems.
There is nothing wrong with highlighting self-harm and suicide in the media AS LONG AS they are represented truthfully and respectfully for the serious problems that they are.
“Plus people leave you alone once you start threatening to hurt yourself.”
I can’t actually find the words to describe how repellent that is. Anyone who would abandon someone who was threatening to hurt themselves is a poor example of a human being, and anyone who would make a joke about that fact is just as bad. I have heard countless stories of people managing to fight and overcome self-harm and suicidal thoughts thanks to a well-timed StarKid song, or watching the musicals, or even after speaking to one of the Team. For StarKid to repay them by making a flippant joke out of it makes me really angry.
Team StarKid is in a position where they have quite a lot of influence over a huge amount of young people, many of whom will have struggled with issues such as self-harm, and telling them that people are likely to leave you alone and not offer support if you admit to self-harm is, quite frankly, disgusting.
I am ashamed to call myself a StarKid after this. I hope this never happens again. I will ask them for an explanation but until this time Team StarKid will not be getting any of my support, and I hope anyone reading this also asks StarKid what they meant by this.
If you have ANY problems, be they with self-harm, suicidal thoughts, anything like that, I cannot stress enough the importance of talking to someone about them. Friends, parents, teachers, doctors, hell, if you want to drop a message into my ask box do it. Just talk to someone. Don’t suffer in silence because you absolutely DO NOT HAVE TO.
28. What are your thoughts on Redvines?
Before I went to the US I last year I figured out where to get them (through the Redvines Facebook page - the people there really helped me out). I went into a bunch of stores and eventually me and my friend found them and I bought two packs - one to eat and one as a “souvenir”. They were disgusting in my opinion. I ended up using them as a straw by biting off the ends but they made the soda I was drinking taste even worse and I felt like throwing up. I have had a few bites since then but I really don’t like them that much. They’re edible is what I’m saying.
